This school year, a new class was added to NCHS’s list of academics. One of our science teachers, Ms. Colling, started a forensic science class for students wanting to become criminal investigators. This class is for juniors and seniors and is located on the first floor in Rm. 1004.
Kelly Walsh High School taught forensic science before NC.
“Actually, KW has taught it for a few years, and the principal here, Mr. Wilson, wanted to offer it at NC because so many kids wanted to take it,” said Colling. “So he told the science department we were going to offer it, and asked if anyone wanted to teach it.”
Colling explained why NC added forensics to their academic list. Mr. Wilson thought it a good idea to add forensic science to NC so students could support their future career in criminal justice, or even just for fun.
“You’ll work with DNA, fingerprints, hair follicles, lead prints, all that kind of stuff,” said junior Avalon Born when asked what she does in the forensics class.
Born explained that they work with all kinds of DNA when it comes to investigating crime scenes.
“Yes, it’s for juniors and seniors and kind of Algebra II or above math ’cause we do a little bit of Algebra and Trigonometry in the class,” said Colling.
“I think it’s important because it’s not only a science class but it’s also a CTE class, so it can train kids to get into the field of forensics, whether they want to be a crime scene investigator or a lab technician or something like that,” said Colling.
Born also says that forensics is easy and fun. “Super easy, a lot of fun, I’ve learned a lot from it.”
“I love it, personally,” said Born.
