The young Mustang basketball team begins their season hosting the Arvada Wildcats this Thursday at 7:30. Although the season only started weeks ago, some players have been preparing since summer break.
“I’ve been out for a bit with a broken arm, but I’ve been getting in the gym as much as possible. Talking to teammates, coaches, watching a little bit of film here and there,” said senior Rogan Potter.
This year Rogan Potter is one of the few upperclassmen on this predominantly young team. Since officially starting, the Mustangs have been working through the early season motions. “We’re off to a great start. We’re having a lot of fun, you know, getting to know each other, getting chemistry built up. Just working on our offense, defense, talking, rotating everything,” said Potter.
Looking to their first game the Mustangs are hopeful for a win against the Wildcats. The Wildcats are the only out of state team the Mustangs will face, and will be tough competition, already having secured a 2-1 record.
“We’ve never seen them before. We’ll just have to come out and play hard and learn as the game progresses,” said Potter
It’s predicted to be a difficult game as the Wildcats come from a 4A school and just beat their last opponent 75-48. In order to win, NC is looking to play heavy defense. “I expect us, you know, to be a defensive team, you know, work on defense, and just try and keep them to a lower score than we are,” said senior Tanner Hagar.
All fans attending the game should expect to see Potter and Hagar leading the team with help from Senior Tays Turnbull. “He’s kind of our big man and you know he’s been around the program for four years and he’s gonna have a huge huge say in that leadership role too,” said Coach Kurtis Patik.
